Design West

For two weeks next summer, from June 23 to July 6, 2018, graduates and professionals alike will get the opportunity to work with leading Irish and international designers from renowned studios across Europe in the West of Ireland. This is a chance to explore the wild and rugged Connemara landscape, using it both as a mode of research and as a source of inspiration, unplugging from the daily grind of commutes, deadlines, media saturation and constant connectivity.

Don’t worry though – 21st-century connectivity and technology prevails back at the base camp of the GMIT campus in Letterfrack. It boasts excellent Wi-Fi, CAD, CNC technology, laser equipment, robotics and digital manufacturing in superbly equipped workshops, all ideal for making work across the following disciplines: graphic design, typography (2D & 3D), illustration, book and editorial design, packaging and poster design. While typography is core, Design West is for people with a passion for making, adventure and fun.

Summer is a time for exploration and discovery, for meeting new people and taking on new challenges. Connemara may not guarantee a rain-free summer but Design West can promise that participants will gain from one-to-one and group instruction with top Irish and international design professionals over this two-week programme of discovery, learning, reflection, adventure and making.

The fee includes accommodation (individual room, shared living space, kitchen, bathroom), tuition, lectures, walking tours and workshop supervision. It does not include travel (flights) to and from the course or most daily meals, although participants will be invited to an opening and closing dinner ceremony. Participants should bring their own laptop and organise their own travel insurance.
